Hosted by Season 34 champion Robert Irwin, the competition is judged by Shirley Ballas and Mark Ballas, with Derek Hough serving as mentor during the premiere. Contestants face demanding ballroom routines, including the jive and salsa, before judges eliminate one male and one female dancer in the opening episode.
Derek Hough Emphasizes Technique
Throughout the premiere, Hough repeatedly stresses the importance of technique as contestants fight for what many describe as "the biggest dream job on TV."
The series combines high-level choreography with emotional personal stories, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to become a DWTS professional.
