Men Reveal Why Birth Trauma Led Them to Choose Vasectomies at a Young Age
Two men have opened up about choosing vasectomies in their 20s after difficult personal experiences, saying trauma, mental health struggles, and concerns about future pregnancies shaped their life-changing decisions.
The Emotional Toll of Fatherhood
For Alex West, becoming a father brought happiness alongside emotional pain. After witnessing his wife's traumatic first labor, he hoped their second child's birth would be easier.
Although the delivery went more smoothly for his wife, Alex experienced a panic attack during the birth. He later said unresolved trauma from the first pregnancy, combined with postnatal depression, made him realize he could not continue with the couple's original plan of having four children.
Alex described the months after his sons were born as emotionally empty. While others celebrated fatherhood, he struggled to feel the connection he believed he was supposed to experience.
Rather than asking his wife to continue using contraception, he decided a vasectomy was the fairest long-term solution for their family.
Why More Younger Men Are Choosing Vasectomies
The procedure, commonly known as "the snip," permanently prevents sperm from reaching the semen by sealing or cutting the vas deferens.
Recent NHS England figures show that 26,385 vasectomies were carried out during 2024-25, marking a 16% increase from the previous year. Men aged 35 to 39 accounted for the largest number of procedures, while almost 950 men under 30 also chose the operation.
Alex underwent the procedure after turning 30, following advice from his doctor to wait before making a permanent decision. He described the operation as quick and virtually painless, saying it was completed within minutes while he listened to music.
Another Young Man Chose a Different Path
Sam Knight reached a similar decision for very different reasons.
After a former partner became pregnant and later chose to have an abortion, Sam realized he never wanted children. He contacted a urology clinic in New York and underwent extensive counseling before doctors agreed to perform the procedure.
Because of his age, physicians repeatedly asked whether he might regret the decision in the future. They also explained that vasectomy reversals are expensive, not always successful, and should never be relied upon when choosing the procedure.
Sam ultimately decided the permanent option matched his long-term goals. He said he preferred dedicating his life to music, creativity, and his career rather
Doctors Urge Careful Consideration
Medical experts continue to describe vasectomy as a safe and effective form of permanent contraception, but they stress that anyone considering the procedure should carefully weigh the long-term consequences.
Healthcare providers generally recommend counseling before surgery and remind patients that reversal procedures are not routinely available through public healthcare systems and may not restore fertility.
For Alex, the decision ultimately came down to protecting his family's well-being. Despite loving his children deeply, he believes stopping at two was the right choice after everything they experienced together.
