Dolly Parton’s niece Rebecca Seaver paid tribute to the country icon on Tuesday, Aug. 25, after Parton died at 80 following a brief battle with cancer.
Seaver, 39, shared a collection of family photographs on Instagram, remembering her aunt as both a deeply loved family member and a source of inspiration to people around the world.
“The grief we feel is insurmountable,” Seaver wrote, describing the enormous love surrounding Parton and the lasting impact she had on her family.
‘She Has Always Been the Light’
Seaver is the daughter of Parton’s sister Cassie and had a particularly close connection with the legendary singer.
She established the official Dolly Parton archive, curated Parton’s book Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones, and served as executive director of Dolly’s Life of Many Colors Museum.
Alongside photographs spanning years of family memories, Seaver described Parton as “the light” for those closest to her and for the wider world.
“We all wanted to be better versions of ourselves for her sake,” she wrote, adding that she hoped everyone would continue striving to do so.
Seaver also reflected on the personal loss of her “most trusted confidant,” calling Parton her best friend, favorite adventurer, name-giver, godmother and “precious Aunt Granny.”
Seaver Celebrates Parton’s Life and Legacy
While mourning her aunt, Seaver emphasized that Parton’s death should also be remembered as a celebration of the life she lived.
She wrote that joy and grief can exist together, describing Parton’s life as one lived openly and with an extraordinary heart.
Seaver also promised to carry forward the dreams and stories associated with her aunt, saying it was an honor to preserve and tell Parton’s story.
Her tribute ended with a deeply personal message of love and farewell to the woman who had played such a central role in her life.
Seaver also expressed her belief that Parton had been welcomed into the afterlife by her late husband, Carl Dean, and her mother, Avie Le
Family Confirms Dolly Parton’s Death
Earlier Tuesday, Parton’s nephew Bryan Seaver confirmed the singer’s death in an emotional Instagram video.
Bryan, who served as Parton’s head of security for more than two decades after his father Larry held the role, said Parton had asked him years earlier to make the announcement when the time came.
He described the moment as one filled with both pride and profound sadness, while saying the sadness belonged to those left behind rather than Parton.
Parton died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville after being admitted on Friday, Aug. 21. Her representatives said she had faced a brief battle with cancer; the type of cancer was not disclosed.

Parton Had Recently Spoken About Her Health
Days before her death, Parton had publicly acknowledged that she was dealing with health problems.
She said she had been managing health issues that she had not fully addressed while caring for her husband, Carl Dean, and noted that she had experienced serious health struggles earlier in her life.
Despite those challenges, Parton said she remained focused on her work and the projects she still hoped to complete.
Her representatives also highlighted the singer’s decades of charitable work, including the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and support for medical research.
For Seaver, however, Parton’s legacy remains deeply personal: a beloved aunt whose influence extended far beyond music and whose family memories will now become part of the story she has pledged to preserve.
